Chris Newman writes from Ilkley... |

| It's been a while since I've been able to sit down and do an update to this page - sorry about that, but it's been a very busy June. | ||
This time last month Maire and I were in Denmark, after which I went off to the US to teach and perform at Steve Kaufman's Acoustic Kamp in Maryville, TN. This was my third visit there, and the best so far. It's an incredible experience being at an event like that - completely surrounded by music & musicians for the duration. The kamp is split into two weeks, with different instructors and courses in each week. I was a 'week one' instructor and had an absolute blast. I taught six classes, several masterclasses and workshops, and took part in several spontaneous jams. |

| I stayed on for the first part of week two as a mandolin kamper and
sat in on four different classes with Alan Bibey, Emory Lester, John
Reichman and Carlo Aonzo. It was particularly interesting to see the kamp
from the 'other side' for those couple of days - I certainly came home with
a pile of things to think about on my second instrument. Most students come
from the US or Canada, although there were several Europeans there this year
and one chap from Australia. It's a really great event and I would recommend
anyone with an interest in flatpicking or fingerpicking guitar, mandolin,
old-time or bluegrass banjo, dobro, bass or fiddle to think about taking a
trip to Maryville next June. For more information go to www.flatpik.com. While I was having fun in Tennessee Maire went off to Ireland to teach at the Cairde Ni Cruite Irish harp week in Termonfeckin, Co Louth. This was the 21st year the summerschool has happened, and she hasn't missed one yet. Next week we head off to Italy for a few concerts, then two gigs in the south of England, then...unemployment. For a few weeks at least. The new duo CD will be finished at that time. Let's all enjoy the great weather while we can...now where did I put that bottle of Pimms? |
